Book Review: Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay by Nicola May. #BlogTour #MMICB #Giveaway

I am very happy to be hosting my stop on the blog tour for Nicola May’s latest book, Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay. Thank you to Author Nicola May for my advanced copy. I was honoured and excited to read this before it was published. And thank you to the brilliant Rachel from RachelsRandomResources.com for organising this blog tour. I don’t take part in many blog tours now, but for Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay, I most definitely was very keen to get my place.

Description:

The cast of the runaway bestseller, The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay, are back – including Rosa, Josh, Mary, Jacob, Sheila, new mum Titch and, last but by no means least, Hot, the adorable dachshund.

Newly wed, and with her inherited corner shop successfully up and running, Rosa Smith seems to have all that anyone could wish for. But the course of true love never did run smooth and Rosa’s suspicions that her husband is having an affair have dire consequences.
Reaching rock bottom before she can climb back up to the top, fragile Rosa is forced to face her fears, addiction and jealousy head on.
With a selection of meddling locals still at large, a mystery fire and Titch’s frantic search for the real father of her sick baby, the second book in this enchanting series will take you on a further unpredictable journey of self-discovery.

My Thoughts:

Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay is the sequel to The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay. I loved the first book as much as I enjoyed this one. You can read book 2 as a standalone, but reading the first book would give you a better introduction to Cockleberry Bay and the characters you will meet. I found myself getting a good reminder of the residents of the Bay and a short recap of some of what happened in book 1. So as I said you can read as a standalone if you wish.

Coming back to Cockleberry Bay was like coming back to a place I know and love. Catching up with Rosa, Titch, Mary and the boys from The Lobster Pot was great. I felt comfortable that I knew their characters and was looking forward to seeing what everyone had been up to. Of course it was great to hear from Hot the little sausage dog too. Hot also got up to his own escapades.

Rosa is now married and running the corner shop in Cockleberry Bay. But is she happy? Is she content with her life? Come along on Rosa’s journey of self discovery. Along the way I shared Rosa’s pain, joy, laughter, friendships and much more.

The character development of Rosa in this book is fantastic. You can tell from the writing that Author Nicola May knows ‘life’. Life is not easy, you find love, get married find a job…. and et voila …happy ever after. No! life has bumps and some of them are mountains. Yet the author writes with emotion, care and humour.

“No, Ed Sheeran hasn’t moved to Cockleberry Bay.”

The writing is current with even a mention of Meghan and baby Archie (British Royals).

When I finished book 1 and read some reviews, many readers were asking the author to write book 2. I am embarrassed to admit that I was hesitant because book 1 was so good. But I was a fool, I know and love Nicola May’s writing and her books so I should have known and have had faith that book 2 would smash it. …….and it did. Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay is as good as The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay. I loved Rosa’s story. The author has the ability in her writing to make us care for her characters. When Nicola May describes her books as “chick lit with a kick”, she describes this book better than any reviewer could. Nicola May has smashed it again with another amazing brilliant book. Great characters, perfectly descriptive location and a plot that has humour, romance, friendship and unexpected escapades. Highly recommended and I predict like book 1, this too will become an Amazon bestseller.

About the Author:

Award winning author Nicola May lives in Ascot in Berkshire with her rescue cat Stanley. Her hobbies include watching films that involve a lot of swooning, crabbing in South Devon, eating flapjacks and enjoying a flutter on the horses. Inspired by her favourite authors Milly Johnson and Carole Matthews, Nicola writes what she describes as chicklit with a kick.

Book Review and #Giveaway. The Big Event by Anne John-Ligali.

Thank you to Rachel at RachelsRandomResources.com for organising this blog tour, and thank you to Anne John-Ligali for my copy of this book. I did a cover reveal for this book at the beginning of the month, and mentioned at that time how excited I was to read it. I was right to be excited, it is a brilliant book.

Description:

You are cordially invited to the party of the season where you’ll meet Constance and friends in action.

Constance Jeffries is excited when she gets the chance to meet up with virtual friends at a get-together in a London hotel. She’s been tweeting and messaging her lovely friends for years and feels they must be just as excited to finally meet her in person too. Or so she hopes.

The Big Event is first part in a short story series about the importance of ‘real’ friendships and how it’s the little things that matter the most.

Ligali_TheBigEvent_Ebook.jpg

My Thoughts:

This is a lovely easy reading short story. I think the cover does a great job of representing the inside story, the characters and the sparkles. Constance will be an interesting and friendly character to follow and I am already looking forward to seeing what she does next.

The story feels like it is setting a base for more stories to follow, yet still being a very enjoyable read on its own. I think if you use social media yourself, you will be able to identify with the characters that Anne John-Ligali has created. I wonder how many readers will have particular social media users in mind when they read this story?

I have a feeling this Author will be very popular, and her books will be quite addictive reading. I can’t wait for the next instalment.

I am already looking forward to the next part of this online friendship story, which is due out next year.

GIVEAWAY TIME. 😊🍰🍵

And now for an amazing giveaway that suits this book so well. Sorry international’s but its UK only due to the prize location. You can win a Sparkly afternoon tea for 2 at London’s Vertigo42 in Central London, and an e book copy of the wonderful book The Big Event.

Author Bio.

Anne John-Ligali is a writer and the founder of Books and Authors UK, a popular website featuring author interviews and book reviews. She loves all things books: reading, writing, going to book events, and meeting other book lovers. She has written a series of short stories and is currently writing her first novel.
When Anne is not writing, she is likely to be at soft play with her kids, taking long evening walks in Hyde Park, making green smoothies, window shopping, or having a pampering session at her local beauty salon (whenever she gets the chance). She can also be found watching box sets (albeit with a bit of shame at still having to catch up on Scandal, Grey’s, and Downton).
Originally from Peterborough, Anne now lives in London. After moving to London, she studied graphic design at the University of Arts and has held a number IT administration jobs in the city. Anne continues writing and aspires to write more women’s ficton books, a non-fiction book and several children’s books.

BookReview #BlogTour: The Sinking Chef, by Sylvia Ashby & #Giveaway.

BookReview #BlogTour: The Sinking Chef, by Sylvia Ashby & #Giveaway.

Welcome to my stop on the book blog tour for the new book by Sylvia Ashby, The Sinking Chef Pot Love 2. Thank you for much to Jenny NeverlandBookTours and Author Sylvia Ashby for my copy of the book and for my space on this tour.

sinking chef

Description:

Ashley has a YouTube channel, The Sinking Chef. It’s filmed right in her kitchen, so she doesn’t go out much. When James calls with an offer to take her to lunch – the same James that got her fired from her dream job three years ago – she accepts. Against her better judgement, of course.
Now Ashley has all kinds of secrets and things are only going to get worse.

The Sinking Chef (Pot Love 2) is a light, enjoyable and easy to read romantic comedy. With Sylvia Ashby’s gift of humour there is plenty to laugh and smile about, but the book does have its serious moments.

The Sinking Chef Cover-1

Published April 17th 2017 by Vangtorp Volumes

My Thoughts:

This is the second book in the Pot Love series, but I didn’t actually realise this until I had already read the book, so I think it is safe to say that it is fine as a standalone. I didn’t feel anything was missed out or that I was confused at all. Although, as always reading the first book first is better! There is also a free Pot Love book on Sylvia’s website which has recipes. (I assumed that was where the ‘2’ in Pot Love 2 came from. Duh me!).

As regular readers of ChocolatePages would know, I do enjoy a good foodie book, and more recently I have taken a liking to books involving social media. When I read the description of this book a cookery channel on youtube and humorous, I was pretty sure I would enjoy the book. I did enjoy reading The Sinking Chef, very much. Ashley is a very likable character who I could relate to and often I would cringe for as she makes silly decisions which seem to make her life easier for the moment, but both she and I will know will make things much harder for the future! I wanted to shout at her that I could see what will happen if she does this that and the other. Ashley is like the girl next door, or the insecure girl that we are or were at one point. I think every woman will be able to understand part of Ashley.

As a chef, we have a few lovely recipes added in and also a few laughable ones too…… (Pot Noodle… shh!). No, really, as a Chef, Ashley is talented and I found the food talk quite delectable.

Ashley is a funny character as she tends to ‘read on the internet’ about everything and more often than not finds a reason or explanation for whatever it is ‘on the internet’.

“I’ve read on the internet how to recognise it. This particular one is called the silent treatment

The Sinking Chef involves love, life, laughs and a good dose of scrumptious foodie talk. The Sinking Chef was an easy, funny read that gave me butterflies in my stomach on more than one occasion! I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Sylvia Ashby’s work.

Christmas Confessions & Cocktails by Vicki Lesage. Blog Tour, Review & Competition.

Christmas Confessions & Cocktails by Vicki Lesage. Blog Tour, Review & Competition.

Christmas Confessions & Cocktails by Vicki Lesage

I’m very happy to be part of this lovely festive blog tour, woo hoo its nearly Christmas. Time to relax, give and receive gifts, eat, drink and read! Vicki Lesage brought me very swiftly into my Festive spirit with this collection of short stories.

-Blog Tour-

Description:

Party girl Vicki tells it like it us, from her crazy Christmases growing up in the Midwest (book auction, anyone?) to her even crazier holidays in her new home of Paris (like a marathon 8-hour meal sitting on a stool). Bizarre gifts, weird food, and holiday travel disasters are just some of tales you’ll chuckle at in this collection.

This Christmas-themed memoir features 25 funny and heartwarming essays, all with a tenuous tie to Christmas, and pairs each with a delicious drink recipe. So grab your martini shaker and get ready for some great cocktails and some hearty laughs this holiday season!

christmas confessions

My Thoughts:

This is the first Christmas book I have read this year, and I have to say it did get me into the Christmas spirit. The Author tells short stories of her Christmas themed experiences. There are funny, heart warming and festive. To round each story off there is a cocktail recipe that is in some way related to the story. I liked these recipes a lot! I got some nice ideas for cocktails I might make over the festive season. My favourite cocktail was mentioned actually!

Grasshopper. -creme de cacao.

                          – creme de menthe.

                          –  vanilla vodka.

                          – half-and-half. (I usually used cream here!).

grasshopper

A lot of the stories were based in Paris, so we hear some French traditions, some nice and some seem very strange to me being British, but it was a good insight into French festivities.

I think this is a good book to get into the Christmas spirit and perfect if you just want quick reads. You can read one of her tales or you can just keep reading all the 25 tales in the book. It was kind of like a girly chat with a friend you haven’t seen for a while, a great catch up of funny and light hearted tales. Beware though, it will make you feel like cocktails, there are even mini cartoon cocktail pictures after each chapter (kindle version).

paris

Description:

When newly-single party girl Vicki moved to Paris, she was hoping to indulge in wine, stuff her face with croissants, and fall in love. It proved to be much more difficile than she’d imagined. In this laugh-out-loud memoir, this cheeky storyteller recounts the highs and lows of her life in the City of Light. Sassy and shamefully honest, Vicki makes you feel as if you’re right there in Paris stumbling along the cobblestones with her.

Will she find love? Will she learn to consume reasonable amounts of alcohol? Will the French administration ever cut her a break?

A funny memoir about coming of age and embarking on a new life in Paris. Part travel memoir, part love story, this collection of funny essays.

I heart all the books

Vicki Lesage is already a best selling Amazon Author, enter this competition and check out her books on the links above.

A COUNTRY PRACTICE EXCERPT

In the car park at the hospital, a black Mercedes eased in beside the yellow one. ‘Well I never,’ said Miss Bird, peering through her window, ‘are we being honoured by a visit from royalty?’ Brendan, who was now in uniform and had been giving her a backrub, confirmed that it was not Prince Charles who alighted.

It was in fact a weary and rather rumpled-looking Bernard Myers. He was met at the hospital entrance by a less than friendly Judy Loveday and taken to Marta’s office.

‘Mr Myers, Matron. Here at last.’ Marta gave her a look that would freeze hell over.

‘Thank you, Sister, I think that’s Miss Bird wanting attention, is it not?’ Judy vanished at speed. Marta held out her hand to Bernard.

‘Mr Myers, I’m Marta Kurtesz, we spoke on the phone. What a trip you’ve had. Please do sit down.’

‘Thank you. I’m sorry I look so dishevelled, I haven’t slept since I found she’d gone. Phone calls to everyone I could think of, hospitals, police, I even rang the morgue. And then I went to see her friend in Newcastle, I was out of my mind, I –’

‘Please – there’s no need to apologise.’

‘How is she? And the baby, a little girl, you said. Can I see them?’

‘My Myers, you can see your little girl in just a moment. But your wife – that’s a different matter. Sandra won’t see you or the baby. She says she wants nothing to do with either of you.’

He sat there in stunned silence. He had not expected this and it took some time to digest. He loo

looked completely shattered, Marta thought. She couldn’t help feeling some sympathy for him.

‘Me, I can understand,’ he said finally. ‘I’ve treated her so badly. But the baby?’

‘I think, in her mind, the two of you are inextricably linked. You wanted a girl, isn’t that right?’ He nodded. ‘You got what you wanted, she sees it – and I don’t think she’s being quite rational, we’re not always, when we are hurt – as just another example of you getting your own way.’

‘If I could just have a minute with her. A chance to explain.’

‘Not until she says so. She’s feeling very unloved.’

Unloved?

‘She says you have found someone else.’

‘But it’s not like that at all!’

Marta wondered what it was like but he just sighed and shook his head and asked if he could please see his daughter and she took him to the nursery. Like all new fathers, he looked at the little red bundle in wonder and awe. He asked about the humidicrib, was she okay, and Marta explained about the prematurity and her tiny lungs, she’d be out of there and on her own tomorrow most likely, she was doing really well.

‘She’s beautiful, just like her mother.’ He turned to Marta. ‘I’ll get a room at the motel. I’ll stay until Sandra agrees to see me. I have to see her. I want to apologise. I want her to know that I love her. That there’s no one else, no one at all. I did one stupid thing, Matron, and I’ll do anything I can to make up for it. Can you tell her that?’

‘I’ll do my best,’ Marta said.

She hoped for the baby’s sake that she had the necessary skills for her new role of marriage guidance counsellor.

Besides, it’s not like I’m ever in one place for more than a few days at a time. As the next hottest thing out of Austin, the band and me are riding the wave, and the music is all that matters.

Until her…

Lily Tennison has “complication” written across her beautiful face. But I can’t get involved. The timing’s all wrong. But she’s under my skin, and I can’t resist her troubled eyes and sweet smile. And I do have a little time to kill. Not much, just a few days in Dallas.

So I’ll scratch the itch and move on, like I always do.

Simple, right?

My Thoughts:

This is not my usual kind of read, I found the sexy talk in it to a little bit embarrassing at first. But it surprised me that I really got into it. It made the story come alive and it made me root for the main female character Lily. Lily comes across as vulnerable at first, she has a cute stutter to her voice and seems taken by Cameron straight away. But as her character develops and we hear more about her, you can see a strength to her character which is endearing.

Cam is the sexy rocker and at first there seems to be plenty of reasons to dislike him. As a typical sexy woman obsessed rocker man. He achieved his fame and loves that the women flock to him. But as the story develops I grew to really like him.

The story is like sugar and spice, it is sweet but also very spicy. The story was written from Cam’s point of view, which was strange at first that it was written from a male point of view, (being women’s contemporary romance), but this was one of the points that made the book different and so readable.

I enjoyed this book, the ending was great. Obviously I don’t want to give you spoilers, so read it yourself and see what you think. But I loved it.
