The TBR Tag.

The TBR Tag.

so many book

This is the TBR Tag, in other words, the books I have to read and have not read yet!! I have only included books that I currently have. I think there are lots more books that I want to read, but I haven’t got yet.

I saw this tag on Katie’s site, link below: Thank you for this Katie. ¬†ūüėČ

I thought it was a really fun post to do, so I’m giving it a go. I won’t officially tag anybody, but if you do this tag, leave me your link below so I can see your answers.

Enjoy! Here goes:

1. How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

I was lucky enough to win a book journal. It is one of the best prizes that I have won, because I can keep a list of all of my books, and as I read them I can also make notes along the way for my review. I also have a list on Goodreads, though I don’t think this is completely up to date! Plus it has lots of books on it that I don’t yet own.

2. Is your TBR mostly print or e-book?

Mostly ebook, I think that’s because I have been accepting so many books to review and I have them piled up on my kindle. I have quite a few print books too, some bought myself and some review copies.¬†

3. How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

Mostly it’s based on what I have agreed to review. My reviewing time at the moment is about 2 months ahead because I have so many, so I have my line up of tbr’s in order for the next while. However, if I get offered one that sounds really amazing, I sometimes bump it up my list.

4. A book that’s been on your TBR list the longest?

Probably ‘A Season to Remember’ by Sheila Flanagan. I received this as a Christmas gift, I didn’t read it at Christmas and it got pushed back. It’s the kind of book I want to read at Christmas or at least winter. So, it’s been waiting a while. When I do read it, I’m sure I will love it. It will be cold and snowy outside and the spicy scented candles are burning and I’m drinking hot chocolate.

a season to remember

5. A book you recently added to your TBR?

The latest one that was added to my list is ‘Kidnapped by Nuns’ by Bob Fuss. Bob is a retired CBS News Correspondent, and I think he will have some amazing takes to tell. I am exited to read this.

6. A book on your TBR strictly because of it’s beautiful cover?

I wouldn’t read a book solely based on its cover, but the covers do bring me in to read the blurb. I do like books with beautiful covers, they look so enticing to read. One I recently requested from NetGalley is The Coincidence Of Coconut Cake, by Amy E Reichert. This cover is lovely and so enticing, don’t you think?!

7. A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading?

I plan to read them all….. eventually! ¬†ūüėČ

8. An unpublished book on your TBR that you’re excited for?

‘For the Love of Ash’ by Taylor Lavati looks like a lovely book all about the importance of family and love. I have been given a copy of this by the author in exchange for an honest review. I love to receive arc copies, and I’m really looking forward to reading this. This is due to be released this month.

9. A book on your TBR that basically everyone has read but you?

I think this would have to be ‘Chocolate Wishes’ by Trisha Ashley. This has been out since 2010, so I think most people who like the same kind of books as me, would have read this. I love the cover of this book, so quaint and lovely looking. I think it looks like a perfect book for a chocoholic book lover like me! If you have read this, let me know how fantastic it is. I promise I will read this soon, it looks so delightful.

chocolate wishes

10. A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you?

I was recommended to read this by AJ from

Frozen Charlotte by Alex Bell. AJ told me this book was totally amazing, I read her review of it and it sounds a very creepy book, but really good too. AJ raved about it so much, that I really am looking forward to reading it.

11. A book on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

A book which really is next on my tbr list because it look so good is ‘Japan Guide..Less: Emails’ from Japan by Nicole D’Arcangelo. This book looks so funny and brilliant. I also think I will be able to relate to it really well because it’s about a lady’s life teaching English and surviving in a foreign country, which I have done and loved.

12. How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

At the moment my Goodreads TBR list is at 33. I’m think I could probably add a few more to it, but 33 is plenty to keep me going for a while. I started the Goodreads challenge this year and said I would read 30 books this year, so far I have read 7, so I’m doing well.

That was a fun tag to do, if any of you bookbloggers or readers want to join in, then please do. Let me know some of your answers or add me your link to your post below. I’d love to hear from you.¬†

Post Pals. How YOU Can Help a Sick Child.

Post Pals. How YOU Can Help a Sick Child.

This is the most important, emotional post I have ever or probably will ever write.

Post Pals - Putting a Smile on Childrens Faces

I found this website from reading Glamour magazine, they had written about it and I thought I would have a look.

POST PALS is a charity set up and manned by volunteers to help sick children in a way that anybody can do. It doesn’t cost a fortune, you don’t have to commit to anything, all you do is write a card, or a letter to a sick child.

We all know how much a nice letter or card can brighten our day. Imagine these children and their siblings, parents, carers or guardians. Just a little letter or card can bring a smile to their faces when they are struggling with their health.

Post Pals - Putting a Smile on Childrens Faces

No home addresses of the children are given, they each have a PO Box. If you want to help, have a look at this site:

You can read about each child that is waiting to hear from you. The web page will give you advise on what kind of things to write AND what NOT to write.

If you like you can send little gifts, they can be as inexpensive, home made or expensive as you like. The site has guidelines on things to be wary of depending on the child’s illness.

Post Pals - Putting a Smile on Childrens Faces

¬†I’m writing this blog post to make more people aware of this amazing organisation. Please help if you feel you can. You can also help by spreading the word. Noone is too old or too young to write. There is a cuddly toy writing to one of the children! ūüėČ

Make a child smile, it will brighten their day.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Book Review: The Cortlandt Boys, by Laura Vanderkam

Book Review: The Cortlandt Boys, by Laura Vanderkam

Book Review: The Cortlandt Boys, by Laura Vanderkam.

Thank you very much to author Laura Vanderkam for my copy of this book. I am happy to share my thoughts in this review.

Book Description:

A small town high school basketball team wins the Pennsylvania state championship with an improbable last second three point shot. The Cortlandt Cavaliers celebrate their unlikely victory, but good fortune changes the boys’ worlds in unpredictable ways. This story revisits the characters 10 and 20 years later as the ramifications of their youthful success play out over the course of their lives, forever linking them and the people around them to this little town that has its ways of not quite letting you go.

My Thoughts:

When I first read the description of this book, I was expecting similarities to the hit t.v series One Tree Hill. That was what initially drew me to this book, as I loved the series. Just to make it clear though, the book was nothing like it!

The book is set in four parts.

The Prologue, which is told from Max’s point of view between 1993 and 1994. We get an introduction to all the characters here and a basic overview of what has happened. The Cortlandt Cavaliers have just won the state championship basketball game.

Part One is told also from Max’s point of view between 2003 and 2004. She comes back to Cortlandt after moving away, as a journalist to interview the boys from the team ten years after they won the championship. She wants to find out what everybody has been up to since then and their thoughts ten years after the game.

Part Two is told from Janie’s point of view between 2013 and 2014. This is twenty years after the big game. Janie is now 17 years old.

The Epilogue is told from Janie’s point of view, and gives a conclusion to the story and the characters we have grown to know while reading the book.

This book is the author’s first fiction book, Laura Vanderkam has written lots of non fiction books before. I’m not sure if this has had an impact on the way that she writes, but the writing style was different to what I have read before. It is written with such a great insight into human nature, like she really knows the characters and the way their minds work, the things they would say, the decisions they have made. I did think at one point, is she writing from past experience. But having spoken to the author on Twitter, she assures me that the story is completely fiction. I have to hugely congratulate her on her insight of human nature.

The story talks about basketball, a bit of mystery and a bit of romance. I’m not a fan of sports reading and the basketball scenes were not my favourite part of the book. However, because the story is about this huge life changing event, which is winning the state championship, I think the author did a good job of keeping the non sports fans interested.

I liked when I got to the mystery part of the book. It kept me gripped to see what had happened and who was to blame for the incident…….. ¬†

The characters in this book are fantastic. As I mentioned before, the author has such an insight to human nature. A great quote from the book is from Max, when she is thinking about writing her article about the Cortlandt Boys ten years later, she thinks:

“What is life like when the biggest thing that will ever happen to you happens when you are seventeen?”

This quote does reflect the book well, I think.

My favourite character is Janie, she is a very intriguing character, she says herself that she likes to think of herself as unpredictable! I think she is a product of her upbringing and the things that happened to her and her parents while she was young. There is a very interesting part of the book about Janie’s ‘friend’ who lives in the hotel. Watch out for it!¬†

The author also participated in a Twitter chat last week, where she spoke of her book, the writing process and the difference between writing fiction and non fiction. If you want to go and read the chat, use the # of #CortlandtBoys.

Author details:

Twitter: @lvanderkam

She also blogs daily at

If you have read this book or are planning to read this book, I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Thanks for reading and until next time, Happy Reading!

Books I received for Christmas.

Some of the Books I received this Christmas.

I received some lovely books this year, some which will be really helpful with my blog.

The first was from my Gran-in-Law, she knows I love to cook but don’t have an awful lot of time in the evenings. So hopefully this Gordon Ramsay fast food book will be very helpful and delicious.

I also received a fiction book called ‘Chocolate Wishes’. This was from¬†my blogger Christmas gift swap friend Shannon. I have written a separate post on that, which you can find on my blog. I am very excited to read this and I will write a review on it when I finish it.

I also received two great blogging books from my lovely Hubby. He has seen how much I have enjoyed my blog and since I only started it in April, less than a year I will take all the help that I can. So, these books look really good.

Blogging for Dummies will certainly have some great tips for me, but also I have found that some of the information in there I do already know. This made me feel like quite an accomplished blogger. Go me!! ūüėČ

Blogging for Happiness is looking really good too. It does make me very happy, and so does reading. So the two will just go hand in hand. I’m really looking forward to reading this book.

I was also very lucky to have been given a years subscription to The Good Food Magazine. I have subscribed to this before, but ended it a while ago. I used to get so excited about the new issue coming through the door, now I will have that again.

Hopefully I will find lots of delicious recipes to cook and bake. Then I can tell you all about them here on my blog!

The last book is ” 101 Great Things Every Woman Needs to Remember”. So, for all you other great women out there, let me give you some good things to remember:

You are beautiful when you speak and act from the heart.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

You’ve got a style all of your own….. and its cool.

I think I need to read this every once in a while to remind myself of all the positives and to behave and believe accordingly.

So, these are some of the books I received as gifts this Christmas. I still have plenty of other books on my to be read list, mainly¬†from author / publisher requests. I will keep reading, keep writing and keep enjoying it all. That’s the best way, and the way I will be starting off my new year.

Tomorrow is fresh, with no mistakes in it”¬†¬†¬† Anne of Green Gables.

The Festive Tag.

The Festive Tag.

With December just arriving, I think its time to do my Festive Tag. I was tagged by Charlotte who blogs at and Tweets @CharSwinhoe

Thank you for the tag Charlotte, what a great way to start off December and enjoy the beginning of the festivities.¬† So, I have 15 favourite festive things to think of, let’s get started! ‚ô•¬†¬†

1. Favourite Festive Food: Well, anyone who knows me will know that this answer has to be chocolate. But I also love Christmas cheese and cranberry sauce, the sauce makes it more Christmassy for me! Yum.

2. Favourite Reindeer: I actually don’t know that many reindeer names? So, I think I will have to say Rudolf! That cute red nose. ‚ô•

3. Favourite Day from the 12 Days of Christmas:¬† “Two Turtle Doves….”?? is that right?? If this question means the song, then that. If it means the actual 12 days of Christmas, then of course Christmas day, though I love Christmas Eve too. Err, bit confused there.

4. Favourite Christmas Song: I love The X Factor, so usually at Christmas I like whatever they have as their Christmas hit. Of the well known Christmas songs, I like ‘Mistletoe and Wine’.I love listening to Christmas music as¬†I put my decorations up and wrap the gifts.

5. Favourite Christmas Present: I think my Kindle was my best recent gift, I use it everyday and I tweet A LOT from it! I have had loads of fabulous gifts over time. I have been very lucky. Honestly though, I think I give great gifts too!¬† ūüėČ

6. Favourite Christmas Film:  I love Mary Poppins, it just reminds me of Christmas. Chim chiminee, chim chiminee chim chim churoo!!

7. Favourite Cracker Toy: Honestly, they are all rubbish. I just like to pull them and win. I don’t care what the prize is, they are all bad!

8. Favourite Cracker Joke: Again, all rubbish!! The jokes are not as bad as the toys, the jokes can be so bad they are amusing.

9. Favourite Christmas Decoration: A very easy one this, it has to be the Christmas tree, I love to decorate it and I love to have all our gifts underneath it.

10. Favourite Candle Scent: Usually throughout they year, I like linen type smells. But at Christmas time, the scent of trees or cinnamon is best.

11. Favourite Christmas Advert : The Bear’s Christmas, by John Lewis. The song that went with it was great too.

12. Favourite Christmas Tradition: Well, this isn’t a worldly tradition,¬†but its become a tradition for my Husband and I. We go to a market on Christmas eve, there¬†is great festive spirit there, it stays open until midnight and its cheap! We usually get each other a last Christmas gift and have something nice to eat. I love it.¬†

13. Favourite Place to Spend Christmas: At home with my Husband. Cosy with lots of treats makes it perfect.

14. Favourite Christmas Fact: I like the fact that it is Jesus’ birthday. That’s the reason we all celebrate.

15. Favourite Snowman¬†Accessory: The carrot! We don’t often get piles and piles of snow enough for snowmen, but when we do its great fun adding the carrot for its nose.

I’m going to throw the snowball to some other bloggers that I’m sure will be getting into the festive spirit of things. I hope you enjoyed reading my answers, I look forward to reading yours. Anyone who wants to join in, please leave me your link so I can read your answers.

I tag:

Viola`s Christmas Gift Swap.

Viola`s Christmas Gift Swap.

I have been invited to be part of The Christmas Blogger Gift Swap, and YOU can take part too.

Its been organised by Viola  @violahelen_

She has come up with a great idea for us bloggers to celebrate Christmas between us and get to know our fellow bloggers a bit better. Its just for UK bloggers (sorry international bloggers, but its a cost thing I think Рperhaps you could organise one in your country? Let us know).

Anyway, its a gift swap and a way to get to know other bloggers and their amazing blogs. You will get paired with another blogger at the beginning of December (by Viola). Then you have a bit of time to get to know them, before you can arrange to send them a lovely Christmas gift.

My initial worry was its going to be expensive! But, no you and your blogger partner can decide amongst yourselves if you want to set a price, or not, or even send homemade gifts? Its totally up to you! That’s part of the fabness of this idea.

Visit Viola’s site and fill in her google form.¬†¬†

Write a blog post about the event. (within 3 days so we can get lots of bloggers involved).

Get paired up, get to know your blogger friend, buy gifts and send.

  • November 28th: Deadline for submission form.
  • December 1st: Find out blogger friend.
  • By December 17th: Send off your gift.

  • Fill out the google form.
  • Write a blog post about the event.
  • Send a couple of nice gifts to your paired blogger by December 17th.
  • Write a post about your gifts (include photos) after you have received them.
  • Send links to Viola of all your blog posts.

Thank you to Viola for organising this, I love the idea and I hope you do too. If you get involved from reading my post, please let me know as I would love to know which of my followers are doing this. I look forward to reading all the further posts from this event…. and to meeting my blogger friend! Can’t wait to meet you!¬† ūüôā

She has a fantastic new blog, which I absolutely recommend you check out.

I haven’t been blogging for that long, so I wasn’t sure what this award was. After reading a bit about it, it seems a great way for bloggers to get to know other bloggers and a great way for you to get your blog out there.

I love blogging, but its taking time to get followers and for my reader figures to rise. Although I’m writing for me because I enjoy it, I also would be happy if I got more followers and if more people read my posts.

Therefore, being nominated for this is FAB.chocolate-heart-of-chocolate1

So, a quick review of what The Liebster Award is, and the rules:

4. Nominate 11 bloggers with under 200 followers and set them 11 questions to answer. *

Some random facts about me:

Now to answer Lyndsey’s questions to me:
