Happy Publication Day! Guest Post & Giveaway by Author of ‘Interpretation’ – Dylan Callens.

A Very Happy Publication Day to Dylan Callans.

Today ‘Interpretation’ is released and to celebrate, I have a spotlight and a giveaway for the new book. ‘Interpretation’ by Dylan Callens is a dystopian fiction that explores hope and happiness in the bleakest of conditions and what happens when it’s torn away.

interpretation

August 1st 2017 by Cosmic Teapot Publishing

Interpretation Blurb:

Carl Winston awakens to find his son, Liam, screaming with fear. Trying to understand why, Carl tries to soothe him. Neighbors gather in front of Carl’s apartment to help – until they see him. The crowd cowers back, afraid of this monster.

Carl runs. His life of luxury is ripped away. Forced beyond the city limits, Carl sees a land bereft of life. Traveling in search of answers, his quest comes to a sudden halt when he collapses. As darkness shrouds him, a figure hovers from above.

Traveling along the same route, Eva Thomspon finds Carl and nurtures him back to life. Together, they continue the journey, finding out that their lives have too much in common to be a coincidence. As their affection for each other deepens, an unknown nemesis attempts to remove their only source of happiness – their love for each other.

Dylan Callens Bio:

dylan callens

Dylan Callens lands cleanly. That would be the headline of a newspaper built with an anagram generator. And although Dylan is a Welsh name meaning god or hero of the sea, he is not particularly fond of large bodies of water. His last name, Callens, might be Gaelic. If it is, his last name means rock. Rocks sink in the sea. Interestingly, he is neither Welsh nor Gaelic, but rather, French and German. The inherent contradictions and internal conflict in his life are obvious.

If you like the sound of this so far, keep reading. Dylan has given us a short excerpt, and generously offered a paperback copy for international giveaway! So, if you like the sound of the excerpt and the blurb, scroll down to rafflecopter, and wish yourself luck that you will be the lucky winner of ‘Interpretation’.

GOOD LUCK

Excerpt:

Carl closed his eyes and tried to laugh at himself.  Barely a squeak left his mouth.  What was he thinking, trying to enter this godforsaken wasteland by himself with no supplies?  Still on his back, he dreamed about opening a bottle of Ocean Surge.  Wet bubbles danced against his tongue, bathing his taste buds with refreshing fruit-infusion – small bursts of happiness made his lips sing an ode to joy.

But forget that fantasy; sulfur-ridden tap water would be just as good.  Carl knew the taste would not equate, but its effect would

Book Blitz: Mixing it Up, By Tracie Bannister.

Book Blitz: Mixing it Up, By Tracie Bannister.

There have been shouts of glee and excitement that Tracie Bannister has brought out another fabulous new book. I, for one can’t wait to read it. It sounds amazing.

best book gif

Mixing it Up, by Tracie Bannister.

Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, Manhattan upper-cruster Cecily Sinclair now uses that pricey utensil to dish up fancy French fare on her cooking show, Serving Romance. When there’s an executive shake-up at the network, she’s not worried. Not much anyway. Her show’s a hit after all. Why would the new CEO want to mess with success?

The driving force behind several buzzed-about networks, Devlin Hayes is considered to be a wunderkind in the television industry. Although his plans to rebrand CuisineTV and make Serving Romance more Millennial-friendly don’t thrill Cecily, her charming, blue-eyed boss is a hard man to say “no” to and she really wants to keep her job—even if that means sharing screen time with a loathsome blast from her past.

Mercurial Italian chef Dante Marchetti a.k.a. “Il Duce” was once Cecily’s boss, and she has the PTSD to prove it. Now the owner of one of the hottest restaurants in town, Dante’s egomania knows no bounds and his constant attempts to provoke and upstage Cecily make her want to conk him on the head with a saute pan. She thinks they’re toxic together, but viewers love their chemistry and clamour for more.

As Cecily battles to maintain the integrity of her show, she finds herself scheming and manipulating right along with Dante and Devlin. Is she fighting a lost cause? Does she really belong on TV, or would her culinary talent be better served elsewhere? And could one of the men who makes Cecily’s blood boil ignite a passion in her for something other than food?

Author Bio.

An avid reader and writer, Tracie Banister has been scribbling stories since she was a child, most of them featuring feisty heroines with complicated love lives like her favourite fictional protagonist Scarlett O’Hara. Her work was first seen on the stage of her elementary school, where her 4th grade class performed an original holiday play she penned. (Like all good divas-in-the-making, she also starred in and tried to direct the production.)

Tracie’s dreams of authorial success were put on the backburner when she reached adulthood and discovered that she needed a “real” job in order to pay her bills. Her career as personal assistant to a local entrepreneur lasted for 12 years. When it ended, she decided to follow her bliss and dedicate herself to writing full-time. Mixing It Up is her fourth Chick Lit release, and in it Tracie finally got to live out her fantasy of being a Cordon Bleu-trained chef.

My Thoughts:

This is actually the first Susan Lewis book that I have read, and now knowing that she has written over 30 novels, I am very happy to say that my ‘want to read pile’ has just grown a lot bigger! My Mum and my lovely bookblogger friend Irena both recommended Susan Lewis to me, so when the opportunity came up to take part in this blog tour, I jumped at the chance. (You can read Irena’s review of this book  HERE!

The first chapter is the setting of this book, where we hear about the girl who has gone missing Jessica. After that first chapter, we hear from all the other characters who all have their own separate stories but as the book continues, you see how they become linked up.

From the description on the front cover of this book, you read “Sometimes the truth is best kept secret”. This book is a lot about secrets and should we keep things to ourselves, is that the best way to protect others or protect ourselves. It is a book that makes you think. In a way the book kind of reminds a little bit like Jodi Picoult books. And I am a big fan of Picoult, so this is indeed a compliment to Lewis.

The book tells the story of Jessica’s family and those who love her, their grief and need to know what has happened to her. Then we have Andee, who is having family problems, but is the detective who has been asked to try to find Jessica. Then we have Rowzee and her sister Pamela. They both have secrets of their own. So with this big mix up of characters, secrets, lies and loss, Lewis has developed a brilliant novel which will keep you up late reading, and intrigued as to what happened to Jessica, what about the other secrets, will they come out or will they stay with the owner until death parts them?!!

Rowzee was definitely my very favourite character in this book, she is kind and generous to a fault. Even when she finds out terrible things about people she is still the person who says they should be given chances and understanding. Is she generous and caring to a fault? You will have to read and see for yourself.

A quote that is quite prevalent to this whole story is said by one character who shall remain nameless until you read it yourself:

“It goes to show that you never know anyone as well as you think you do….”

susan

Susan Lewis was born in Bristol in 1956. Her father Eddie, was a Welsh miner, a poet, an engineer and an unashamed communist who loved to write. Her mother, Eddress, one of thirteen children, was a fiery, indomitable woman with great aspirations for her young family. Susan and her younger brother were brought up in a spanking new council house on the outskirts of town; money was tight, but they were a happy, lively family.

Susan was nine and her brother five when her mother died of breast cancer at thirty-three; Susan’s father was thirty-seven and he never married again. Sending Susan to boarding school was thought to be ‘for the best’ but Susan disagreed. No one listened to her pleas for freedom, so after a while she took it upon herself to get expelled. By the time she was thirteen, she was back in the little council house with her father and brother.

At eighteen, Susan got a job at HTV in Bristol and at twenty-two moved to London to work for Thames Television. She moved up the ranks; from a secretary in news and current affairs, to a production assistant in light entertainment and drama. It was whilst she was at Thames that she started writing fiction. Thirty-six novels later, Susan is one of the UK’s bestselling fiction writers. As well as fiction, Susan has written two moving memoirs about her childhood in Bristol: Just One More Day and the sequel One Day at a Time.

Losing her mother at such an early age had a profound effect on Susan’s life, which is why she is a long-term supporter of Breast Cancer Care, the only UK-wide charity providing specialist support and tailored information to anyone affected by breast cancer, and Winston’s Wish the charity for bereaved children.

After years living abroad in LA and France, Susan returned to England in 2009 and now lives in a beautiful converted barn in Gloucestershire with her husband and two dogs.

About The Author.

It was a strange and twisting road that led to the publishing of my second novel.

Born and raised in Bristol, England. I spent my adult life in business, the majority of that time marketing cars. I eventually owned the largest Saab specialist in the world, before a divorce put an end to that part of my life.

This led me to leave Bristol to live halfway up a mountain in the Welsh valleys, start a part time six year English Literature course at Bristol University, and attend creative writing classes in Cardiff.

My interest in English literature flourished and I have won several prizes for my short stories. My first book, ‘Twenty Short Stories –Settling a score, reached No 6 in the Short Stories Best Sellers and is stillavailable. My second novel, a romantic thriller entitled Hand Over Fist was released earlier this year

Chasing What’s Already Gone evolved from a short story Carpe Diem in my second anthology Twenty One Short Stories. I could not get the two main characters out of my head and I had to find out what happened to them after the end of the short story.

I now live very happily halfway up that mountain in the Welsh Valleys with my wonderful partner, Mari, and our rescue dog, Wolfie.

The Run Begins Book Cover

Published August 26th 2013 by Createspace

My Thoughts:

This is a very short novella, just the prequel to a story that I have not yet read, but after reading ‘The Run Begins’, I intend to read the rest of Lou Malloy’s escapades.

The book really just gives us a taster of Lou Malloy, his background, family and why he seems to make the decisions that he does. I found that we get a really good idea of the type of character that Lou is, and he is one that I like. Caring for his own, but tough, street wise and the no nonsense type.

The short novella introduces us to Lou as a character, and also to  Frank James’ writing style. His writing is smooth and grabs the reader into his fictional world easily.

I recommend this book to all crime and thriller book lovers. I know that the Author has a career in law which always appeals to me in books related to crime, as the Authors take their real like experiences into their fiction work. I look forward to reading more from Frank James.

Book Review & Giveaway: A Death in the Valley by John Gruffydd.

Book Review & Giveaway: A Death in the Valley by John Gruffydd.

Thank you to publishers Austin Macauley for my copy of this book. I was particularly interested when they got in touch with this book as it is a crime thriller based in the valleys of Wales, which is where I am from. Keep reading to see what I thought of it….

best book gif

Description:

Told from the perspective of Gareth, an honest loyal retired solicitor, this is a mystery in the best tradition with twists and turns that keep you turning pages until the end. John Gruffydd takes you with Gareth, asking; is anyone as they first seem? Who can he trust? Can he trust his own instincts? Showing great understanding of police and legal processes, Gruffydd also shows such insight into human nature that you will start to look into your own heart to question, if it were me, what would I do?

a death in the valley

My Thoughts:

I was intrigued by the blurb of this book, especially when it said :

“…..you will start to look into your own heart to question, if it were me, what would I do?” – I was watching out for the parts that made me consider what I would do…

The story follows Gareth, a retired solicitor as he is asked to take on another case as it involves people he knew and worked with. The story is mainly based in Pentreglo, where within the first chapter I was gripped by the characters and the wonder of what is going on here!?

The book does a great job of making you wonder who do you trust? and do you really know people? There were multiple characters within the book who could bring out different emotions within me as the reader – compassion, anger, sadness and laughter. The plot of this book takes us from a little Welsh village to Cardiff and then Spain. There were twists that I didn’t see coming and I was left guessing right until the end who was the untrustworthy one! This is just the kind of book that I love, one where you can tell the Author has experience of the tale he writes, I suspect that Gruffydd has done some legal work in his time. He kept us suspended until the end, but gave us enough storyline and information so that we can consider every character and are they really as they come across. I totally see what the Author means when he wrote:

‘is anyone as they seem?‘ – I have to say I did suspect the ‘criminal’, but then I considered everyone, so I cannot claim to have guessed the twist!

I love John Gruffydd’s style of writing, he writes so eloquently but he adds in real comedy within his characters. I found his main character Gareth so funny, even though ‘Gareth’ wasn’t trying to be funny, I think he seemed to me to be a grumpy older man who thinks a lot! He did make me laugh! I haven’t read a thriller that has made me laugh before, so I really applaud Gruffydd for this and I would certainly read more of his work just based on his writing style.

“….she had commented that they were arriving in dribs and drabs. That was enough to set me off, and pedantic as ever, I had demanded to know whether we were a drib or a drab”

Another part of this book and Author that I loved was I could tell his nationality so openly and obviously (to me), as he scattered in Welsh colloquial language. This was so nice. If you don’t understand Welsh, don’t worry, it is obvious what he means. However if you are Welsh I really recommend this book.

“You come here with your posh voice and fancy manners treating me as if I’m twp”

I really enjoyed this book, it was full of suspense, quick witted humour and a lovely dose of Welsh-ness! I absolutely recommend it.

The generous Author and publishers at Austin MaCauley have let me host a giveaway whereby I can offer 5 paperback copies of this book. I am going to giveaway 3 from my rafflecopter giveaway and 2 from my Twitter account. If you think this book sounds good, enter my giveaways and wish yourself luck. BOOK COVER

Description:

For underworld enforcer Richard “Rico” Sanders, it seemed like an ordinary job. Retrieve his gangster boss’s priceless pigeon-blood red ruby necklace and teach the double-dealing cheat who stole it a lesson. A job like a hundred  before it. But the chase quickly goes sideways and takes Rico from the mean streets of Chicago to sunny Honolulu, where the hardened hit man finds himself in uncharted territory when a couple of innocent bystanders are  accidentally embroiled in the crime.

As Rico pursues his new targets, the hunter and his prey develop an unlikely respect for one another and Rico is faced with a momentous decision: follow his orders to kill the couple whose courage and character have won his admiration, or refuse and endanger the life of the woman he loves?
