Description:

After finally meeting in person at the publishing party of the season, Constance and Estelle are determined not to let their friendship return to mere virtual champagne bottles and uploaded pictures of food.
It’s been a busy year, and Constance feels it’s time to reward herself with the spa break Estelle gave her for Christmas. Naturally, Constance wouldn’t dream of taking anyone other than Estelle, and this will provide the perfect opportunity to bond with her new chum.
As the excited pair spend some quality time together, they realise it’s not just writing books they have in common, but something that goes much deeper. After a few Jacuzzi sessions, facials, pedicures, and a massage by sexy Senior Therapist, Julio, everything seems to be peachy until an unexpected visitor turns Constance’s weekend of bliss … on its head.

A two-day spa break.

Sparkling water on tap.

And the perfect massage.

But who’s rubbing who up the wrong way?

Publication Day: April 30th 2018

My Thoughts:

After reading part 1 of the online friendship series by this author, I was keen to learn what happened next. The Weekend Spa Break brings Constance and Estelle on a weekend that they will both remember.

The book has a few surprises for the reader and for the characters. There was more to this book than I was expecting and it was really good to see a more in-depth version of the characters.

I loved the online parts of the story. Most of us have ‘ online lives’, and it was interesting to see how Constance and Estelle brought the two together. I loved the Instagram updates from the girls and from the outer characters. There are reminders in this book of the advantages and disadvantages of showing ourselves online.

This book is very current and the author showed a great deal of knowledge in one particular theme that is close to my heart. I won’t say what as it will be a spoiler, but let me tell you it brought Constance and Estelle closer too.

Brilliant read and I hope there will be a part 3 of the online friendship stories.

Cover Reveal. The Weekend Spa Break, by Anne John-Ligali.

Today is the cover reveal for the second short story by Anne John-Ligali. You will probably remember, I did a cover reveal and a book review for the first part of this story, ‘The Big Event’, where online friends meet up in person for the first time. ‘The Big Event’ was brilliant, so I was excited to take part in the blog tour for Anne’s next story where two of the girls that met at the Big Event, go for a Spa Weekend together. My review of the book will come soon and be part of Anne’s blog tour, but for today, take a look at the beautiful cover and have a read of the blurb for The Weekend Spa Break by Anne John-Ligali.

Happy Publication Day. The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay, by Nicola May. Blog Tour, Review & #Giveaway. #TCSICB

Happy Publication Day. The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay, by Nicola May. Blog Tour, Review & #Giveaway. #TCSICB

Today I am very happy and honoured to be on the Blog Tour on Publication Day for the brilliant new book by Nicola May. As you will know if you saw my Cover Reveal post for this book, I love Nicola May’s books. I think Nicola is a talented, inspirational woman. (Nicola would be one of my literary tea party guests!). Her new book ‘The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay’ is a 5 star read for me. It lived up to my very high expectations and I loved it.

Today is the start of a brilliant blog tour, whereby there will be lots of rave reviews for this book, and a lovely giveaway. So be sure to check out the rest of the bookbloggers on this tour, and enter the giveaway which is at the end of this post.

The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay.png

Some high praise for Nicola’s books by some famous names!

‘This book will twang your funny bone & your heartstrings’ – Milly Johnson
‘A fun and flighty read’ the Sun
‘A funny and fast-paced romp – thoroughly enjoyable!’ Woman

Description:

Rosa Larkin is down on her luck in London, so when she inherits a near-derelict corner shop in a quaint Devon village, her first thought is to sell it for cash and sort out her life. But nothing is straightforward about this legacy. While the identity of her benefactor remains a mystery, he – or she – has left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.
Rosa makes up her mind to give it a go: to put everything she has into getting the shop up and running again in the small seaside community of Cockleberry Bay. But can she do it all on her own? And if not, who will help her succeed – and who among the following will work secretly to see her fail?
There is a handsome rugby player, a sexy plumber, a charlatan reporter and a selection of meddling locals. Add in a hit and run incident and the disappearance of a valuable engraved necklace – and what you get is a journey of self-discovery and unpredictable events.
With surprising and heartfelt results, Rosa, accompanied at all times by her little sausage dog Hot, will slowly unravel the shadowy secrets of the inheritance, and also bring her own, long-hidden heritage into the light

The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay Cover.jpg

MY REVIEW:

The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay is typically Nicola May brilliance. Her plot, characters and portrayal of chick lit escapism is perfect. Nicola’s writing pulls the reader right into Cockleberry Bay so that we can feel the cold air and smell the sea air and sandy beaches of Devon. We can feel the warmth of some of the characters and the bitter taste of others.  As you can tell I loved this book. I was engrossed in Rosa and Hot’s life, decisions, highs and lows.

The main character Rosa inherits a shop from an unknown benefactor. So she and her beloved dog Hot travel down to see the shop and investigate what could be her new life. Here the adventures begin, with new people to meet, adventures and trials to keep Rosa and the reader intrigued.

This isn’t the kind of chick lit book that you can predict exactly what will happen. There are surprises throughout the book. I kept wanting to read more and see how Rosa would manage, what she would do next, and who out of the new people she meets would she trust or avoid. There is a brilliant set of side line characters in Cockleberry Bay, and along with Rosa we have to decide which ones are nice and which are nasty!

Rosa has had a tough life, and I like that Nicola May is able to show Rosa’s nature which would depict such emotions from a scarred life.

Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.” – Khalil Gibran.

I can relate to Rosa, she is a girl after my own heart! She loves a J D and Coke, and has an outlook on life which shows strength and an awareness that life is not fair, but you have to make the best of what you have. Rosa grows throughout the book, and character growth and believe-ability shows the talent of an Author who knows lifes ups and downs and can write it so.

“Life isn’t black and white, Joe. There is no rule book – well apart from the one bloody society throws at us”. – (I hear you Rosa and Nicola!).

In any review of this book, there has to be a mention of the co-star main character, Hot the little sausage dog is adorable and Rosa’s love, companion and pride and joy. You can see Hot on the cover of this book, but you will have to read it to find out the double entendre of his name and more cute-ness from the lovely sausage.

If I had read this book as a mystery book and you didn’t tell me who the Author was, I would take a guess that it was written by Nicola May! I love her writing style, her ideas and the way she invents her characters that come to life in the readers head. If you haven’t read Nicola May’s books before, read this one…..and the go read all her others.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.

Blog Tour. Book Review: The Best Boomerville Hotel, by Caroline James.

Blog Tour. Book Review: The Best Boomerville Hotel, by Caroline James.

Thank you to Author Caroline James and Rachel from Rararesources for welcoming me with open arms onto this blog tour. I have read all of Caroline’s previous books and have been excited to read Boomerville since I heard Caroline was writing it. Now the time has come to tell you my thoughts on it. Please visit all the other lovely tour guides for this brilliant book.

Description:

Let the shenanigans begin at the Best Boomerville Hotel

Jo Docherty and Hattie Contaldo have a vision – a holiday retreat in the heart of the Lake District exclusively for guests of ‘a certain age’ wishing to stimulate both mind and body with new creative experiences. One hotel refurbishment later and the Best Boomerville Hotel is open for business!

Perhaps not surprisingly Boomerville attracts more than its fair share of eccentric clientele: there’s fun-loving Sir Henry Mulberry and his brother Hugo; Lucinda Brown, an impoverished artist with more ego than talent; Andy Mack, a charming Porsche-driving James Bond lookalike, as well as Kate Simmons, a woman who made her fortune from an internet dating agency but still hasn’t found ‘the One’ herself.

With such an array of colourful individuals there’s bound to be laughs aplenty, but could there be tears and heartbreak too and will the residents get more than they bargained for at Boomerville?

boomerville

March 13th 2018 by Ruby Fiction

My Thoughts:

Well, what can I say? Except for this is another master piece from the lovely and talented Caroline James. I knew I would love Boomerville, as I have loved all her other books. It isn’t necessary to read Caroline’s previous books, as this can totally be read as a standalone. But having read all her previous, I was delighted to see what some of the characters I remember so fondly from before have been up to.

The Best Boomerville Hotel is a hotel set up and run by Jo and Hattie, 2 bestest of friends. (Their relationship is fantastic, funny and heart warming). During the book, we hear about the various weird and wonderful guests, staff and some of the arranged activities that have been set up in the hotel.

This is pure escapism in a book. Caroline’s words made me laugh, sigh and imagine myself many years from now going on a little or longer break to a hotel like Boomerville. If this place were real, it would be booked out every season! The food also is another very enticing part of Boomerville. The Author is a total foodie like me, and you can tell that by the delicious descriptions of the food and drinks that are served in Booomerville.

“….a tray of almond fingers, fresh from the oven”

The writing flowed easily from page to page and I felt I was part of the journey of Boomerville. I would laugh along with Hattie and Jo. Imagine tickling under Bunty’s (Jo’s dog) chin, then go to devour some of the delicious hotel food made by their amazing Chef Sandra.

This book has the usual Caroline James dollop’s of laughter, smiles, cringes and licking of lips. It is a total gem of a read. I’m ready for the next dish already!

Have a look at the lovely trailer for Boomerville. If you weren’t sure before, you will be after seeing this ♥

Excerpt

PROLOGUE

‘Are you sure you’ve got the right person?’

Rosa took off her bright red woolly hat and scratched the back of her head furiously, causing her dark brown curly hair to become even more unruly.

The tall, pinched-faced solicitor nodded. ‘Yes, of course we have. Evans, Donald and Simpson do not make mistakes. You, Miss Larkin, are now the official owner of the corner shop in Cockleberry Bay.’

He handed the bewildered twenty-five-year-old a battered leather briefcase and pointed to a small combination padlock on its brass clasp.

‘Here. The will stated that you – and only you – can open this, using your date of birth.’

‘This is all very strange,’ Rosa said. ‘And where exactly is this Cockleberry Bay?’

‘Devon, dear, Devon.’ The solicitor looked under his rimless glasses. ‘I take it you know where that is?’

‘I may have a cockney accent, Mr Donald, but I’m not stupid.’

‘Well, open it then.’ The solicitor was shifting from foot to foot in anticipation. He

confided, ‘We’ve been wanting to know what’s in there for days.’

Showing no emotion, Rosa gazed at him with her striking green eyes and asked coolly: ‘Is there anything else I need?’

‘Er, no – but are you not going to . . .?’

‘I need to get to work.’ Rosa put her hat and scarf back on, zipped up her fur-lined bomber jacket and headed for the door. ‘Thank you so much for your help.’

And she was gone.

‘Rude!’

The solicitor peered crossly out of the window of the offices in Staple Inn and watched as the young woman, the briefcase in her arms, strode across the frosty cobbled courtyard and out into the bustle of London’s ancient legal quarter.
